Common questions
The Scan button is greyed out.
macOS only runs the on-device detector when Sensitive Content Warning is switched on. Turn it on in System Settings, under Privacy & Security. NotHotdog shows a yellow banner with a button that takes you there. Come back and press Re-check.
Does it send my photos anywhere?
No. Scanning runs on your Mac and the app has no server to send anything to. If a photo’s original is only in iCloud, macOS downloads it for scanning, and that is between your Mac and iCloud. See the privacy policy.
What do Delete, Hide, Ignore, and Not Sensitive do?
Delete moves the photo to Recently Deleted in Photos. Hide moves it to Photos’ Hidden album. Ignore and Not Sensitive only change NotHotdog’s list and leave your library alone. Ignore is for real flags you’re keeping. Not Sensitive is for false alarms, and it also keeps the photo dismissed if a later scan flags it again.
I hid a photo. Where is it?
In the Hidden album in Photos. If you don’t see that album, choose View ▸ Show Hidden Photo Album in Photos. On macOS it’s locked behind Touch ID or your password unless you’ve turned that off. To get a photo back, open the album, select it, and choose Unhide.
It flagged a photo that’s fine, or missed one that isn’t.
That can happen. The detector is Apple’s, and it isn’t perfect in either direction. For a false alarm, select the photo and press Not Sensitive. NotHotdog will also dismiss photos that look very similar. A clean result means Apple’s detector didn’t catch anything, not that nothing is there.
What does “couldn’t be scanned” mean?
Those photos couldn’t be loaded, usually because the original is in iCloud and your Mac couldn’t download it. They haven’t been checked. Press Retry Skipped, or just scan again, since skipped photos go first.
Why were some photos dismissed automatically?
Because they look very similar to a photo you marked Not Sensitive. A blue banner tells you when it happens. Turn on Show Dismissed in the toolbar to review them. Right-click and choose Restore to Flagged to bring one back, and NotHotdog won’t auto-dismiss it again.
Does it scan videos?
No, only still photos.
How do I start over?
Choose Rescan Entire Library from the menu next to Scan. To erase everything NotHotdog remembers, quit it and delete its folder at ~/Library/Containers/co.wwwroot.NotHotdog.
What do I need to run it?
A Mac running macOS 26 or later, with Photos access allowed and Sensitive Content Warning switched on.
